The Program for Advanced Student Development (PASD) is a brand new initiative started with the intention to provide more opportunities for our students to spread their wings - helping their development as junior researchers and boosting their resumes while also providing the academy with the necessary man power it needs to facilitate experimentation and progress the future.
PASD gives students real world working opportunities to be completed in tandem with their education, leaving them with experience, projects and published research data akin to the work of PhD candidates. Only the most promising students will be offered a position in this program. On average, around 3% of our student body will be considered for PASD depending on their academic prowess, career trajectory, independent working skills, determination, ability to follow instructions and willingness to challenge society's current ideas for the future. The few pupils who have the honour of being hand selected by our esteemed leader and principal, D̶r̴.̵ ̵O̷c̷t̸a̵v̸i̸u̴s̴ ̴C̷u̴l̸l̵e̶n̷, for this position will be placed in a self-guided classroom, free to pursue any (approved) academic research that falls under one of our departments. One lucky student will be appointed as a defacto Research Lead, acting as a liason between staff and students.
Otherwise, students are to govern themselves and provide weekly reports on their findings and advancements on a project outline provided to them by the Hart Academy board of investors.
Frequently Asked Questions:
No, students are conditionally selected for PASD based on their academic achievements, accreditations outside of classwork (whether at Hart or other recognized institutions) and dedication to the mission of the school. Once selected, students will then be required to do a series of tests and cognitive evaluations before being officially admitted into the program.
PASD is a full-time program that students will be required to work on concurrently with their studies as well as outside of school hours when appropriate. Estimated times range from about 24-30 hours per week.
All students will be required to complete four years of schooling whether they are in the PASD program or not. There is no way to ‘fast track’ graduation (even in the case of transfer students and other exceptional situations).
Yes! Students are welcomed and encouraged to expand their research projects in PASD after graduation. However this does not mean that students can submit incomplete research projects with the expectation that they can continue working on them after graduation. All projects and research must be finalized and ready for publication at the end of the program, and if granted permission from our faculty, students can expand on their research projects afterwards.
PASD is a three year program that is open only to 10th grade students. Students are evaluated throughout their first year at Hart (9th grade) and then potentially offered conditional acceptance at the end of the academic year. Once accepted into the program, students are required to continue working on their research projects until graduation in 12th grade.
The program is rigidly structured to last students for the full three (3) years,
but we understand that things do not always go according to plan.
Students will be expected to continue preparing their project for publication and (if appropriate) public display after completing it, regardless of whether it is finished on schedule. Essentially, students will continue working towards these goals in the case of early completion. They will also be free to assist other teams/individuals with their projects.
a part of the program?
No. The program is voluntary and intended to provide students with professional work experience and accreditations which will help them secure university and/or work placements. Students will receive an official copy of their published research, and in some rare cases, students may receive royalties for their publications.
All research is confidential and Hart Academy retains copyright over all student research projects and the information it shares with them.
Official PASD meetings and work periods will take place mainly in Classroom 7, on the second floor of the Hart Academy, but it is expected that students work on their research projects in their spare time, meaning that locations may vary depending on each students availability and access to spaces.
No. Students are not allowed to drop out of the program. If there are concerns about time commitments, expectations or otherwise we recommend not participating in the program.
